Fire Alarm & Control Systems

Fire Alarm & Control Systems are the central nervous system of building fire safety, designed to detect fire early, alert occupants, and activate emergency control functions.

The system performs three core functions:

  • Detect fire (smoke, heat, flame, gas)
  • Notify occupants through alarms (horns, strobes, speakers)
  • Control building systems (HVAC shutdown, elevator recall, door release, smoke management)
  • Communicate signals to a monitoring station or civil defense

Main Components of Fire Alarm & Control Systems

Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP)

The brain of the system. It receives signals, identifies alarm/supervisory/trouble conditions, and activates outputs. Addressable panels can pinpoint the exact device location.

Initiating Devices (Input Devices)

These detect fire or allow manual activation:

  • Smoke detectors (ionization, photoelectric)
  • Heat detectors
  • Flame detectors
  • Gas detectors
  • Manual call points (MCP)
  • Sprinkler waterflow switches

Notification Appliances (Output Devices)

  • Horns
  • Strobes
  • Speakers
  • Bed shakers (sleeping areas)

Control Modules

Trigger building safety functions:

  • Elevator recall
  • HVAC shutdown
  • Magnetic door holder release
  • Smoke management fans
